What we now call, the Biological Revolution, started with Microbiology around 1880. Microbiology
remained the key area of research and development bringing us information about such areas as
public health, disease prevention and treatment, immunology, genetics, genetic engineering and finally
There is no area of life on earth and beyond that does not need knowledge of microbiology. Yet
microbiology was erroneously or perhaps inadvertently phased out around mid fifties of the past
century. This has dire consequences such that much of the ground we gained in promoting science
in general, and as it relates to our environment and public health, has been progressively lost.
This loss is now so severe that our teachers have hard time offering practical skills based science
as well as explaining how the current advances in biology and biotechnology are done and what
instruments and procedures are used. Even the basic light microscope is not fully employed in
teaching yet there are other basic microscopes such as dark field, phase contrast and fluorescent
microscopes that our students and teachers need to be aware of and be proficient in their use.
Reviving Microbiology via pertinent hands-on workshops is our answer to fill this ever widening gap.
Here teachers not only learn the use of the above named microscopes but also learn all of the basic
concepts and skills of microbiology. Can one really learn environmental science, earth science or
space science without knowing how to study these areas for their biological, especially microbiological
and chemical contents?
Microbiology, however, carries with it the connotation of disease which limits the teaching of this
